Every second year, there is the International C. elegans Meeting at UCLA in Los Angeles. This year was my very first meeting, hopefully the first of many! Several thousands of people gather at this meeting, some really big names in science. 5 days of oral and poster presentations, workshops, socialising and meeting new people, possible future collaborators. Its very tiring such a big meeting, but definitely worth the trip. People present mainly ongoing work there so you learn new things and see new data before they get published. I was among those happy ones selected for an oral presentation, of course scheduled to talk on the previous last day so I was extremely nervous during the whole meeting! I was shivering and thought I would faint when trying to reach the stage, but I managed to keep myself together and give a reasonable good talk. On the final evening there was a barbeque on the campus, the most funny comedy show I have ever seen, and then a big party. So funny seeing some of the most famous professors in science dancing to pop songs!! Mind me saying they actually showed some hidden talents out there.... Though it took me two (!) days to find some of them, I managed to see almost all members from the Sternberg Group again: Paul, Weiwei, Demo, Chris, Oren, Sheryl, Steven, Andrea, Mihoko, Adeline, Jennifer, Jagan, Elissa, Alon, Ted, Ryan, Allyson, Janushka and Erich. Even though it had only been barely 2 months, it was great seeing them again. I hope I can convince some of them to come visit me in Europe soon!
