Weiwei told me all about her trip with Barb up north, to the area of Hearst Castle. She showed me pictures of a very interesting beach they discovered: Seal Bay, a beach full of elephant seals. As it was quite a few hours north from LA, I never managed to go there during my stay at CalTech, but now that we were going to San Fransisco, we would definately pass it following highway 1. Weiwei told me to look for a little sign next to the road, and so on monday afternoon, we found this beach. They are not called elephant seals for nothing! My gosh they are giants!! They look like very lazy animals, although it was afternoon so that’s the ideal time to sunbathe. The males are impressive, seem very competetive animals, but then I’m not sure if they were fighting or kissing. Can seals be gay? And do they kiss? Weiwei’s hamsters used to kiss, they licked eachothers mouth, and they were two young males from the same nest!! Or maybe they are just being kind to eachother. Anyhow, gay or not, they showed a behaviour I’ve never seen before. There were lots of seals out there, communicating in a loud growling. I think I prefer the cute litle seals after all.

It looks like your elephant seals were headbutting each other, not kissing. My hamsters were licking each other, but now they just fight, maybe because they got upset after reading your blog.
