House of Blues Hollywood

The first time I heard the name Mat Kearney was in the lab, when Yesenia told me and Weiwei he had a gig scheduled in Hollywood’s House of Blues. Visiting his myspace page I realised it could actually be worth a go. So we ordered 3 tickets, and built up high expectations for the gig. House of Blues is a very nice venue for small concerts. Its a perfect size room, bar in the back, nice acoustics. When entering we got ID’d, and they searched my bag. I knew I would not be allowed to bring my camera in, so when the security guy opened my bag, he told me I could either go back to my car to drop it there or hand the camera to him. I didnt feel like any of those two options, so him being a young male, I figured I had nothing to lose and tried some female charme. Promising him he could page me any time he liked, he let me keep the camera but took out the battery, which he then smoothly dropped in Yesenia’s bag. Thanx again so much dude, but sorry: I mistook one digit in my phone number.
As we were late, and the ID line took some time to get through, we missed all of the supporting band but one song. It sounded alright! The band was called ‘The Feeling”. They are a British band, seemed pretty cool, so I took the opportunity to go meet them after the gig. Foreign people always have the hardest time pronouncing and definetely spelling my name right, but they got it right straight away and all 4 of them signed me a picture. Then it was finally time to check out Mat Kearney live. His voice resembles that of Chris Martin very much, and also the style of music he brings. However, compared to Coldplay, you hear more of a hip-hop and rap influence in Mat’s music. We managed to get excellent positions right in front of the stage, having best views on Matt and his band. Him looking straight at us when some silly girl standing in front of me at a dead moment suddenly yelled “I want you Mat!!” was rather embarassing. I think I thankfully grew out of that kind of behaviour, or well I admit it might run through my mind, but Id never shout it out like that. Anyway, he’s a guy so that boosted his ego I’m sure. Go check out Mat Kearney at www.matkearney.com, he’s becoming pretty big in the US but no idea when he’ll make it to Europe.
